inherent differences in their reality, the words act as a metaphor for the beauty found within the complexity of humanity. Like the multi-ethnicity it symbolizes, the text creates beauty, pattern, texture, and meaning. Positioned within the globe, which is in itself a symbol for continuity and connection, are images that speak of individual acceptance and responsibilities for the c reation of a peaceful world.
The first panel, titled “Puppets of Emotions,” is informed by perceived notions of “Us,” as identified by a couple that are in the very passionate, self absorbed stage of being in love. Driven by their emotions, the two, like puppets, are helpless to act on their own. Somewhat oblivious to the rest the world and humanity, the couple is living in a state of isolation, and perhaps even alienation.
The final Panel, “Extended Family” transcends humanity’s relationship to each other to include the earth itself. It portrays the individual and collective possibilities of human relationships with the earth, its life-giving elements of air and water, and its non human inhabitants. Here, the human “us” which has grown to be a family is portrayed in a harmonious relationship with the totality of the natural world.
This triptych expresses my personal philosophy regarding the possible realities of human relationships. I am expressing the concept that an individual sound or musical note is inherent in each and every element of the earth and perhaps even the universe. When united in an atmosphere of acceptance, unity, sharing and peace, these seemingly disparate notes would create the most wondrous and healing harmony imaginable.
